Breastfeeding in Public: Tips for Confidence and Comfort

Breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful way to nourish your baby, but doing it in public can sometimes feel daunting, especially if you’re a new mom. Whether you’re a new mom or have been breastfeeding for a while, finding the confidence and comfort to nurse your baby outside the home is important and will honestly make your life SO MUCH EASIER! Here are some tips directly from experienced doulas (and nursing mamas!) to help you breastfeed in public with ease.

Know Your Rights

First and foremost, familiarize yourself with the laws regarding breastfeeding in public. Keep in mind, in the US, there is no national law protecting breastfeeding in public, it’s all done on the state level. As of June 2021, all 50 states (plus Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands) have laws in place protecting a mothers right to nurse her baby in public. Knowing your rights can give you the confidence to breastfeed without fear of being asked to leave or cover up.

Practice at Home

Before venturing out, practice breastfeeding in different positions and with various clothing options at home. This can help you find what works best for you and your baby, making the process smoother when you’re in public. Practicing in front of a mirror can also help you see what others see and make any adjustments for your own personal comfort and coverage.

Choose Comfortable Clothing

Wearing clothes designed for breastfeeding can make nursing in public much easier. Look for tops with easy access, such as button-down shirts, wrap tops, or specially designed nursing tops with discreet openings. Layering a nursing tank under another shirt can also allow for more coverage while nursing.

Use a Nursing Cover or Blanket

This definitely isn’t necessary, but if you prefer a bit more privacy, consider using a nursing cover or a lightweight blanket. These can provide a sense of security and reduce distractions for your baby. However, it’s important to make sure your baby is still able to breathe comfortably and latch on properly. Keep in mind that this may actually bring more attention the fact that you’re nursing and may be more challenging to use, so again, we recommend practicing at home!

Find a Comfortable Spot

When you’re out and about, look for a comfortable and quiet spot to breastfeed. Many public places, such as malls, airports, and some restaurants, have designated nursing areas, nursing pods, or family rooms. If these aren’t available, find a bench or a cozy corner that allows you and your baby to relax together.

Stay Relaxed and Confident

Your baby can sense when you’re feeling stressed or apprehensive and may even exhibit those same emotions themselves. Do your best to stay relaxed and confident in order to help your baby latch on and feed more easily. Take deep breaths, focus on your baby, and remember that you’re doing something wonderful for their health and well-being. Positive self-talk and mindfulness can also help reduce any anxiety about breastfeeding in public.

Bring a Hype Man (or Woman)

Having a partner, friend, or family member with you can provide extra support and encouragement and give you the confidence you need to feed your baby in public. Obviously, make sure they’re supportive of you feeding in public, too! They can help create a more private space by standing or sitting next to you, engage in conversation to distract you, or simply offer moral support.

Respond to Curiosity with Confidence

Sometimes, people might glance your way or even ask questions. Respond with confidence and kindness. A simple smile or a brief explanation, if you feel comfortable, can often put others at ease and show that you’re confident in your choice to breastfeed. If someone asks you to “cover up” or makes disparaging remarks towards you, stand your ground as you feel comfortable or simply ignore them. If you feel confident in doing so, you can also gently educate them on your rights.

Join a Breastfeeding Support Group

Connecting with other breastfeeding moms can provide valuable support and encouragement. Joining a local or online breastfeeding support group can help you share experiences, gain tips, and feel less isolated. Knowing you’re part of a community can boost your confidence in breastfeeding anywhere.

Breastfeeding in public is a normal and natural part of taking care of your baby. With these tips, we have no doubt that you’ll be a pro at breastfeeding your baby in public in no time! Remember, you’re providing your baby with the best possible nutrition and nurturing, and that’s something to be proud of!
